A few UK scientists got together to figure out where Americans find themselves most miserable. The state-by-state analysis will surprise contains a few surprises, like the dubious first and notably pellucid final entry. Professor Andrew Oswald explained the results of his research, which finds many popular states on the lists bottom rung, by citing the negative influence popularity can have on the quality of life offered by a given locale. Basically, because everyone hears how great states like New York and California are, loads of people move there, clog it up, drive rent prices through the roof, and ruin them for the early adopters and natives. Of course, some of the data follows common sense: Connecticut aka Dixie’s North-most and the ever-odious New Jersey take their well earned spots in the bottom five.
Louisiana’s high marks, according to Oswald, were stilted by an our-pouring of state pride following Hurricane Katrina and should be taken with a grain of salt. One should assume the same goes for the Sunshine state as well. Unless Florida’s suddenly not a swampy, whang shaped freak show we can bet the data was shaped by high marks given by oldies in love with the blistering heat and gated communities.
