MORE AND MORE AUSSIE CENSORSHIP
February 03, 2010
by JAMES TENAFLY
One of the most redeeming and liberating things about the internet is the ability to post anonymously about anything (yeah, yeah, we’re working on easing our own shit up, OK?). Granted, this privilege is routinely abused by YouTube mouth-breathers and 15-year-olds looking for raunch, but there is still no better way to spew all your vilest, most reproachable libel at former friends, blogger nemeses, and all the smarmy politicians and hacky government lackeys you can drum up. Of course, if you’re in South Australia, none of these excellent freedoms apply to you anymore.
Continuing in their effort to choke liberty and dismantle the internet entirely, the whiny louts that run that South Australian government have passed a law limiting anonymous speech on the internet. In particular, there will be no secretive griping toward them: The new law requires anyone commenting about the state elections to post their name as well as their postal code.
Was anyone else under the impression that Australia was part of the free world? What say you, Australians? It’s hard to comprehend why any so-called democratic country would pass such outrageous laws that are opposed by the majority, unless, of course, by “democracy” you mean a bunch of oblivious natives represented by a jelly-spined attorney general. Is that what you mean?
