On Monday, August 10th, the skateboard community lost another icon, and many of us lost a very good, very kind, solid friend. OG NYC skateboarder Andy Kessler was stung by a wasp and died. I have very little to say about this. I still cannot believe it’s real. When I found out, I was walking out the door with my wife to see the OBGYN for our weekly visit leading up to our baby being born. The extreme emotions of anticipation of life and sadness of death floored me and made me vomit.

This ad was pretty much the only personal information that I had about James Kelch before Patrick dropped off the tapes he shot with him. I’d seen the ad in Thrasher when it came out, and I think I reread the paragraph about a thousand times (click below to read it for yourself). Between it and a few other little tidbits in magazines and videos I pieced together that James could ollie high, fight, do drugs, and basically regulate what seemed to be the coolest skate spot on earth at the time, San Francisco’s legendary Embarcadero. I’m still not sure why I never sought out any more substantial info on Kelch, but I can’t tell you how psyched I was to watch all the interviews and clips that went into this episode and realize that all the admirable traits my brain had created for him had magically become reality.
