This week marks the release of Second Skin, a documentary about virtual worlds and the gamers who live in them and probably the single best movie of this year. It’s gotten a bunch of rave reviews and a lot of press so far, but I think the public at large are blind to the colossal, Brobdingnagian implications this movie brings to the table.

Some quick background. I’ve been curious about this film for awhile – it’s been generating controversy ever since it premiered at SXSW last year. I’m a sucker for entertaining docs like King of Kong and Man on Wire, but this film looked like it would trump them all.  Even before watching it, I knew it’d firmly set itself as my number one documentary of all time- not only the defining movie of the gamer generation, but an anthropological window into our future. Just the cover looked intriguing, enlightening, and absolutely terrifying.
 
And now that I’ve watched it, it’s ruined me.  I can’t enjoy anything now that I’ve been exposed to the greatest and best cinematic work of our generation or any before it. Citizen Kane? The Godfather? Pulp Fiction? More like Schlockizen Kane, the Schlockfather, and Schlock Schloction. It’s as if the film’s director is the first person to really use a camera—to understand it the way Hendrix understood the guitar. And to use it to light mankind’s soul on fire.
 
So take the first small step towards utopia and watch Second Skin.  It might spoil you forever to art and make the rest of your life a pale imitation of those 94 minutes- but at least one day you’ll die happy knowing that you experienced perfect euphoria for a fleeting moment.
 
The filmmakers are also wicked hot.
