taco_baby: what i find funny is how nascar racing is such a family thing. because your dad is a good driver that makes the son one?

ruckus: no, i agree. what i mean is it's funny that so many family members have this "gift" of focus. i find it hard to swallow.

SodaBob: @ruckus: oh, I see. I know what you're saying, but on the other hand, it's a little like any other industry, I suppose. My dad was in the tech/computer industry, and lo and behold so am I. What you grow up around often defines what you consider to be legitimate pursuits, and also defines what you know. The 2nd and 3rd generation racers grow up with it, and probably start at a very young age racing whatever (go karts, etc) - it's not necessarily an innate ability, but training from a very young age. And the exposure of a famous name probably doesn't hurt, either :)

SodaBob: Listen closely. The Indy Mile is in... Indianapolis. Not the south. And the "Unload Guns Here" sign was shown because on the same day as the flat track race at the fair grounds in Indy, there was also the Indy 1500 Gun & Knife Show. The "unload guns here" was a reminder for people bringing their guns to sell at the show. VBS: you need to watch your editing in some of your segments, things like that "unload guns here" sign and the guys carrying the long guns create a false impression (like, in your Liberia series, where you show kids about to eat a human heart - in the video you don't explain that that footage was from the civil war, that it was NOT footage that you had taken, again creating a false impression).

    • Melting_man_1_alv_thumb

ruckus: anyone paying attention and with half a brain could tell the liberia footage was old footage. here, it's more confusing. either way, it's funny and i'm glad it was there. i got a hoot out of it, as my mother would say.

    • Sodabob_deepthought_thumb

SodaBob: I consider myself to have at least half a brain (heh), and I saw no difference between the archived footage and the footage they were taking, nor was there (that I remember) any mention of, "hey, this is archive footage!" or even an indication. I'd have to watch it again to see (which I may), maybe I just missed the subtle hint. A minor criticism, to be sure, but clearly some of these sorts of editing decisions cause confusion. <shrug>

ruckus: perhaps i was a bit harsh. i never thought for a moment that those scenes were ones shot by the vbs filmmakers, but you might be right about it not being overly apparent. i'm sure i'll watch it all again soon and i'll keep that in mind. i still think here the sign looks like it's at the bike race, but i'm sticking with my opinion that it doesn't really matter all that much and is worth inclusion for a laugh if nothing else.
