anonymous: This man is a genius. He makes music sound more complex than nuclear physics or something. I’m interested.

anonymous: weelllll... if a golf player kept on sinking hole-in-ones then everyone will "get it" that he’s a good golfer no? anyway, this man is still a genius... him and Dan Deacon...

anonymous: i think its software he made himself... bladefunner - i also have similar pep talks on alcohol, leaving pee on the toilet seat and not cleaning up the crumbs after making toast. i really am a fun guy, honestly... "remember kids, stay out of trouble"

anonymous: Thanks for the pep talk on drugs, robo-dad.

anonymous: Yes, the question about drugs is an absolute disgrace! it has no place in this video and should have been edited out. If you need drugs to enjoy music (or anything else for that matter) then you really are missing the point entirely. Curtis Roads is an extremely clever man who has carried out pioneering work for synthesis. Granular synthesis is the basis of all timestretching and autotune (yes i know it has been horrendously abused of late) style digital signal processing. if it wasn’t for him and a few other key figures we simply wouldn’t have that. A legendary man...

anonymous: The question about ’drugs’ is an embarrassment

anonymous: I actually found his concepts and explanations quite refreshing. I think he is just so far ahead of us that maybe we don’t get it? What would Beethoven have said if he had heard an Ableton Live ’beat repeat’ or even better Peff’s Beat Repeat Reason Combinator or even the beat sliced rhythms and pads that we here in the CSI programs all the time? Yet today they are common place ’musical’ effects that many people do ’get’ today. This guy is just light years ahead. I don’t think that all music will ultimately sound like that... but as noted in the previous examples, a lot of contemporary popular electronic music is getiing grainier all the time.

anonymous: He’s a smart and well spoken man but a musician, he is not. I make digital music myself and have even had experience in programming noises by typing in commands. The examples he played of his "music" were atrocious and I couldn’t help but laugh out loud when he spoke about how long it took to make them.

anonymous: Naturally I agree what’s been said bellow about the gear but I need to be a nitpicky asshole here and point out that you’re talking about the Hammond tonewheel organ, not the Leslie. The Leslie is a rotating speaker system, not a tone generator. This one’s internal but you can also get them in cabinets and plug anything into them... like a synthesizer or electric guitar.

anonymous: Enough with the drug talk already. People who know nothing about making music or art always assume you’re high on Acid when you make anything even remotely original... well guess what: the most freaked-out composers tend to be straight, go listen to Frank Zappa for fucks sake. Why? Because you can’t composes while you’re slobbering about God like an idiot or being chased by goblins. Same thing goes for literature: Hunter S. Thomson was straight when he wrote Fear and Loathing, it was an emulated trip, a mediated trip, which is not the same thing as popping some pills and running through the streets. After years of working with aesthetics I’ve come to the conclusion that the optimal dosage of stimulants for the purposes of creating and experience art is: One (1) Trappist beer in the 6-8 ‰ range.

anonymous: As a *big* IDM/experimental-electronic fan, this was just...wonderful. Heretofore I hadn’t known that much of the prehistory of what we consider IDM and ambient today, but now that I’ve heard some of his stuff, I *must* track down some of Mr. Roads’ work.
