RaySwore: Of course she felt like she couldn't connect with people after she had some success -- she views the world along through the prism of race and class, not resilience and morality. When she couldn't convince herself that she was a poor immigrant anymore, well... suddenly someone with money who didn't previously measure herself and others by how they rise above adversity (resilience) or how they treat others (morality), suddenly didn't know how to gauge herself or her relationship to other people. Fans who think she's a saint and a prodigy are the mainstream listeners she's aimed to reach and inform, but they also have no idea that decades of sincerer and superior music has flown under their radar before she came along. Instead of turning them onto that music, she undermines whatever altruism she might have intended, by letting their attention rest on her little cult of personality.

RaySwore: For a 30 year old woman, she should have more depth and knowledge than a 16 year old. Of course mainstream pop music is about sex and shallow relationships -- when hasn't it been like that? People of this generation know so much more about the flight of non-western/first world people's lives than any time in history. They're not READY to hear about it? Fuck off. You think they don't see the news, please. Everything she's said about music in this interview is self-flattery.. a bunch of bullshit concocted to fit her contrived narrative about what a authentic outsider she is. Guess what? Producing Western dance music set to rap imagery and lyrical style (with American urban minority grievances replaced by third world grievances) isn't a revelation.. it's just clever and timely marketing. If she really cared about the third world, she'd write in a way that reflected the emotions of people living through it and elicited empathy and compassion from Western listeners. Instead, she peddles their misery and tries to identify herself with to satisfy her need for "street cred" and to satisfy the West's fix for novelty.

QueenBee: Eh... Not saying you're not correct, I just don't put much thought into what any musician thinks about politics.

NEOES: Really? REALLY? I bet 70% of American youth couldn't tell you what the capital of Iran was, let alone what the political crisis in that country is all about. Kids are not being given anything informative in mainstream music...it IS all about titties, pussy, one night stands, getting drunk....stupid, meaningless shit. I'm not saying "Kala" is some revolutionary album or anything...I don't feel her music is really what she believes it is either, but you're delusional if you think a majority of this generation give a shit about the rest of the world.
